On September 26, the Global Citizen Festival was held in Central Park in New York City as part of the launch of the United Nations’ new Global Goals designed to fight inequality, protect the planet, and end poverty by 2030. First Lady Michelle Obama was one of the special guests, and she was there to encourage people to take part in the new campaign called Let Girls Learn. This campaign tries to help the 62 million girls around the world who are not in school. It stresses the importance of a girl’s education so that she can “earn a decent living, raise a healthy, educated family, and improve the quality of life for herself, her family, and her community.” Since then, many celebrities, including Stephen Colbert, Beyoncé, Katie Couric, Leonardo DiCaprio, President Obama, and many more, have taken to social media to share what they learned in school, which 62 million girls do not have the chance to do. More information on this campaign can be found at http://62milliongirls.com/.
