Students spend at Sephora

Want to treat yourself at Sephora but have no idea what to buy? Well you’re in luck, because Sephora has a wide variety of products to meet a wide variety of needs. And, lots of Nazareth students and faculty are shopping at Sephora for skincare and makeup.

80 Roadrunners were surveyed to see what they’re spending their money on at the popular beauty shop and it turns out that most of those surveyed are spending their money on makeup over skincare. That’s no surprise given the fact that teens in America are spending more on makeup in recent years.

According to Piper Sandler’s semi-annual “Taking Stock With Teens” survey, “The number of teenagers saying they wear makeup every day jumped to 45% this spring up from 37% a year ago and around 20% in 2021.” That fits with Nazareth’s survey results. 74% of students surveyed say they buy makeup from Sephora while only 26% buy skincare.

So what’s the most popular makeup that people are buying? The survey results show that Selena Gomez’s makeup brand, Rare Beauty, is with 60% of surveyed students saying they have purchased something from the brand.

The next most purchased brand is Dior with 46% of those surveyed saying they have bought from the brand. Sophomore Carolina Gonzalez loves the Dior Addict Lip Glow which sells for $40. “It’s definitely worth the price and it is very hydrating,” she said.

All of Rare Beauty’s products are cruelty free, vegan, and under $30. I spoke to Selenne who has worked at Sephora for two years. She said that she sees teenagers buying a lot of Rare Beauty and Rhianna’s line, Fenty Beauty. “Rare Beauty has really good products,” she said.

Laneige is the most popular skincare brand with 45% of surveyed students saying they have purchased from the brand, followed by 40% of surveyed students saying they have purchased from the brand Drunk Elephant. Sophomore Caitlin Sullivan highly recommends Drunk Elephant’s Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer. “I would recommend it because it makes my skin feel light and refreshed,” she said.

According to the survey results, the most purchased product was a tie between Rare Beauty Liquid Blush and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. Half of all those who took the survey said they have purchased one or both of those products.

Sophomore Natalia Mora says she likes to wear the Rare Beauty Liquid Blush in the shade Happy in the summer. “I like to wear a lot of it for the sunburn effect,” she said. Another popular product was Sol de Janeiro Body Mist which I personally love, especially #40 with notes of amber and vanilla. It’s not advised to spray perfume in your hair, but this body mist is safe for hair, too. It smells great, it’s perfect for all year round and the mini bottle is only $24.

After the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, the next most used skin care product was The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum with 35% of surveyed students saying they’ve purchased it. Sophomore Alana Perreault highly recommends the serum. She said, “The ordinary has helped clear my skin and take away blemishes. I use it every night.” Compared to other skincare brands at Sephora, The Ordinary is way more affordable and gives just as great results.

Junior Abby Winters likes to keep her makeup simple in the summer by wearing concealer and highlighter, with her favorites being NARS Cosmetics Radiant Creamy Concealer and Rare Beauty’s Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight. She also loves Milk Makeup and would recommend it to any makeup novice. “Milk Makeup is really easy to work with,” she said.

Art teacher, Hannah Salsman emphasizes the need to care for skin before ever putting on make up. She said, “My mom taught me to think of my face as a house. You need to have a good foundation to have a good house.” Her go-to skincare products are Supergoop!’s Mattescreen, Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, and anything from the brand Biossance.

Those who were surveyed spend $62 per Sephora trip on average and visit the store at least once a month. While the price of products can really add up, Sephora is well known for their rewards program, including your choice of a free birthday gift each year. They also have two member exclusive major sales each year, too: the Spring Sale and Holiday Savings Event.

Freshman Lily Martinez plans to buy the Dior Lip Glow Oil during this year’s Spring Sale and Sophomore Mia Gage plans to buy the Sephora Setting Spray.

According to the store’s website, Sephora carries more than 45,000 products from 350 brands. One of the great benefits is that you can return or exchange any slightly used product that didn’t work for you. So, whether you’re into luxury, trendy, or clean products, Sephora is sure to have something for you.
