This school year has definitely been different from anything we’ve seen before, but that did not stop the Boy’s Varsity Golf team from achieving victory this season.
Due to COVID-19, the golf season had a few adjustments. For safety reasons, the players were required to wear masks and social distance. Additionally, many matches were cancelled, the tournaments were much smaller, fewer teams were able to qualify for sectionals, and there was no state tournament.
Nonetheless, the Naz team worked with what they were given. As the players were worried about if they would even have a season this year, they were ready to play no matter the restrictions. The players were appreciative to be able to do the sport they loved while being outdoors.
The season was a really great way to forget about everything that was going on and have a little normalcy in their lives. Additionally, the boys were able to have fun with their teammates and meet new people while competing at tournaments.
With much practice, determination, and teamwork, the boys had a very successful season. Their accomplishments include the following awards: 1st place at the St. Laurence Invite at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course, 2nd place at the Nazareth Invite at Carillon Country Club, 2nd place at the Prospect Invite, a tie with Benet at dual match Oak Brook Golf Course, and Junior Robert Paxinos was announced a sectional qualifier, shooting 83 T21 at sectionals at St. Andrew Golf Course.
Coach Dave Reed shared, “With the support of the Naz administration, we were able to compete for Naz, develop as golfers and team members and stay healthy…we appreciate the outstanding contributions to the Naz golf program of our seniors: John Berger, Connor Devine, Luke Gaffney, Noah Holstrom, Joe Keivan, Danny Metzger and Matt Winters.
Senior Matt Winters added, “My senior season was very memorable because we got to lead the team and make memories throughout the year. I will remember the times spent with my teammates at practice and in the matches.”
Senior Danny Metzger said, “Overall, my last season was a great send off to my four years of work with my teammates, and our team is almost like a brotherhood.”
The team was honored to have Coach Reed and Assistant Coach Jilek lead them to victory. Josef Keivan said, “My best Nazareth Golf memory is being a part of a team with a great and committed coach.”
