Those of you who were with us last year will remember the Just Us Fair Trade Christmas Project. Because Fair Trade is such an important cause, we’ve decided to recap the most important elements of it.
What is Fair Trade?
That’s simple! Fair Trade is simply fair pay for fair work. Buying a certified Fair Trade project ensures that the farmers and artisans involved in its production are receiving a livable wage for their work. This has absolutely revolutionized ailing communities. Buying Fair Trade is buying a future for people who might not otherwise have the power to attain one.
Where can I find Fair Trade products?
Everywhere! You just have to look. I suggest SERRV or Catholic Relief Services. There’s also a sweet store in Oak Park called Ten Thousand Villages. Trader Joe’s has a lot of Fair Trade products, and there’s even Fair Trade coffee at Jewel. Make sure it has a Fair Trade certified mark or stamp somewhere on it. Just because it looks like it might be Fair Trade doesn’t mean it is—I’ve made that mistake before.
Do I, you know, want Fair Trade products?
Are you kidding? Fair Trade is awesome! I know you’re expecting paper-mache paperweights, but it’s so much more than that. Just take the initiative to explore, and you’ll discover gorgeous jewelry, scarves, hats, decorations, and more. Go look! Go! Now! I don’t even care if you finish reading this article—go look!
So do the world, and yourself, a favor. Buy Fair Trade for Christmas (and all special occasions) this year. It will truly mean a lot to someone in need.
If you have any other questions about Fair Trade, feel free to contact any member of Just Us; they will be happy to help. Merry Christmas, and look out for Threads of Hope from Just Us this year!

Fair trade chocolate from Trader Joe’s tastes better than Hershey and Nestle combined.
